Turning 2 brings on ALL kinds of NEW things!

Last week on November 21st our little Sierra Grace turned 2 years old!  Wow.  Let me tell you, it's fun.

We celebrated in Reno with Nana, Gregg and Ashley, Daddy, Mommy, and Peyton

We celebrated in Placerville with The Molinari's
Nona, Papa, Uncle Andew, Uncle Matt, Auntie Shell, Joey, Anna, Charlie, Daddy, Mommy, and Peyton

The BIG 2 year old present was a play kitchen that everyone pitched in for it, including Pops and Ama who are not pictured but celebrated with us earlier.  She LOVES it and plays a lot!  She is still in the stage of "concrete" so she does a lot of dumping and reorganizing and shifting.  But, once in awhile, and more and more, she will move into the realm of "make believe" and pretend to cook us stuff.  It's SO CUTE and I look forward to many more plastic and wooden divine and delicious creations.

To save you, and me, all the details of that past month and all the new changes I will just outline it briefly-some things I'd like to relive, others...not so much. :)

In the past month Sierra:
1. Has decided that she can do EVERYTHING herself! "No, I do it." or "Sierra do it!" are phrases I hear A LOT!
2. Insists on getting in and out of the car and carseat by herself, but taking an HOUR to do it!
3. She needs to put on her own shoes, but can't really, except her rain boots (which she calls her princess shoes because they have the Disney Princess logo on them).  Which means we wear rain boots on most days, rain or shine.  It's ok right now cause it's raining a lot!
4.  She is perfecting her pulling on and off of her pants and so we are gearing up for potty training NEXT WEEK!
5.  She shows a tremendous interest in going pee-pee and poo-poo in the big girl potty but has yet, except once, to make it in.  With that said she can sit on that thing for up to an hour waiting in anticipation. Well, she isn't sitting the whole time it's more like this: sit, wait, get up, look, read a potty book, stand, sit, stand, sit, wipe, flush, get down, put on pants, take them off, get back on potty, sit, wait, read a a potty book, stand turn around look, sit again, stand again, climb down, climb back up, wipe, flush...and on and on for an hour...this girl has an IRON bladder!  More often than not I get very bored of the bathroom so Peyton and I just leave her in there to tend to herself.
6.  Needless to say, with turning 2 comes potty training and we are jumping in full force next week.
7. She can now climb all the way up the very tall bar stool and back down, which means she has now gained the knowledge of how and the desire to climb even more on EVERYTHING (tables, counters, couches, beds, etc.)
8. Sierra is very active and needs a lot of running around.  By the age of two she has ran 4 full miles (1 mile per time), she has been known to run each and every aisle of Costco and the perimeter twice before slowing down...and that's just for a quick break.
9. She's VERY good at kicking a ball and playing soccer and has recently gotten very exciting about RIDING A BIKE!  This is particularly exciting to Jeff, for obvious reasons.  We are looking into a Strider bike for Christmas.  :)
Her original choice of entrance into her new bed
Sierra helping Daddy build her "Big Girl Bed"
10.  Biggest and Greatest milestone to date---A BIG GIRL BED.  Yep!  Two nights ago we moved Sierra into a toddler bed and she absolutely LOVES it!  She has slept better than ever and is SO good at sleeping now.  :)  I am overjoyed that is hasn't been the headache I was expecting.  But, she is VERY proud of her "big girl bed" and even helped daddy put it together.

All snuggled up!
Showing how well she sleeps-Night Night

Excited to be a Big Girl! :)

**My, oh My how time flies!  Enjoy as many minutes of every day as possible! :)

Buying a Minivan

I know, I know... laugh, scoff, roll your eyes, say, "you will NEVER own a minivan."  whatever you can think of, I said once.

Over many hours scouring craigslist we found a few minivans within our price range and mileage range that we decided to go look at.  We originally wanted an SUV, I mean it makes the most sense for our lifestyle.  But, the price difference between an SUV and a minivan in the same mileage range was between $2000-$5000 more.  So...that was out!

Minivan shopping it is!  However, as we began to look more at them and see ourselves in it, it became apparent that they are ridiculously practical cars for families with kids!  To make a long story short we found one we fell in love with.  It has the stow n go seating which means all the seats fold into the floor to make for a completely flat floor (of which means you can haul A LOT of crap in a van).  When the seats are up the under floor space works as storage!!!  It's really amazing. In addition to this obviously amazing feature, the one we were looking at came with a DVD player.  This was not really a must or a need or even a want for me.  But, man has it come in handy on longer road trips!  It allows for just enough peace that Jeff and I can talk in peace....yes, we may be talking over Bob and Larry from Veggietales or Big Bird, but it's a trade off we are willing to make!  :)

Almost two months later and we are still, and even more so, IN LOVE with our minivan "Bessy."

Tribute to our Lincoln Towncar, a.k.a. The Boat

Peyton is 3 months today!  I can't believe it!  Oh I want my life to slow down.  I want my girls to stay little tiny and I want to enjoy and record and remember EVERY SINGLE SECOND of their lives!  It's so true when they say that being a parent is the hardest thing you will ever do!  We are going to celebrate Peyton's 3-4 month birthday and Sierra's 2nd birthday by buying a new-to-us car.  But, we must pay our memories and dues to the Lincoln before we say goodbye.

The Lincoln won't smog and the repair is looking to be too much money, so we are having to say goodbye to the Boat and let it sail as we bring in a more "practical" vehicle into our loving family of 4 and hopefully more.

For the last several years we have been driving Jeff's grandfathers Lincoln Towncar.  Though definitely not the "cool" car to drive in your twenties...or thirties...or forties...or fifties...it has been an awesome, reliable, and comfortable car!  The Lincoln came to us before kids and we have loved it through kids.  But, I must say it has had some happy and funny (once you look back on them, NOT at the time) memories.
I remember the very first time I ever rode in the Lincoln.  Jeff's parents were taking us to I think pizza down in Coloma.  We all piled into the Lincoln.  Jeff and I in the plush back seat and Bob and Barbara in the front.  Bob drove with his golfers hat on and they told us stories of grandpa and grandma driving this car around and how they used to "mug" in the back seat (that's make-out for all of us under the age of 80).  I remember feeling like it was a couch driving down the road and how I felt as if we were floating on clouds.  It was unbelievably comfortable.  Matt Molinari told us it was the kind of car that allowed us to turn our right turn signal on 2-3 miles before our exit.
Fast forward a couple years and, through a series of circumstances, we were in need of a car.  The Lincoln was GRACIOUSLY handed over to us from his parents and thus began the record of being the youngest couple ever to own a Lincoln Towncar. :)  However, we were extremely grateful for it.  We got over any embarrassment that ever may have arose when we sat in it and realized how comfortable it was.
Now, this Lincoln is not just any old Lincoln, it's what Aunt Diana calls a "pimp mobile," complete with red leather seats, red carpeted flooring, red side panels, red roof, a red dash, and a red steering wheel...oh yea!
We lived in Reno at the time we inherited it...this poses a problem when it has Rear Wheel Drive.  That is awesome for southern California, but not so much in Reno.  We were living in Married Student Housing on the UNR campus when we had a very cold and very snowy storm.  The snow piled up about a foot and then after the walkways and road were shoveled and plowed it added another 2-3 feet.  Thus we had a HUGE pile of snow attached to the front of the Lincoln.  We couldn't drive it in that weather so it stayed put.  However, after a couple days and the roads were clear we decided to take it for a spin.  We did not realize that the snow piled in the front of the Lincoln had turned to ice and attached itself to the front of the car because as soon as we backed up the ice ripped the hood ornament right off.  :( Sad day.  I carried that hood ornament around in the car for another 2 years before it got lost one time when Sierra was playing around.
Fast forward to our move to Marin County in California.  We were greeted by several Lincoln Towncar friends there, but they were all driven by people 2 to 3 times our age.  But, that was OK because by now we were SO grateful for a good reliable car that we could care less what people thought!  The students loved the car and always wanted to ride it in.
The introduction of carseats to Lincoln was another story.  Though it is hugely spacious and could fit a multitude of carseats.  The seats are not designed to handle them.  The Lincoln seats are SO plush that we cannot secure a carseat well enough.  In fact when we make a turn often Sierra's carseat moves and she is leaning to one side of the other depending on if we took a right or a left turn. Ha.  Not the safest, but funny to watch.
The Boat served us well in the bay area and only had some minor hiccups that were annoying, but mechanically it was ok.  First the drivers side window just stopped working one day, along with the power seat for the driver and the power mirrors.  So the seat was forever stuck in that position and for the remaining life of the Lincoln the driver would need to open up the door when talking to someone, doing business at an ATM, going through the drive through, etc.  Then Jeff drove through an automatic car wash once and it ripped the antennae off the car and there went the radio, of which the buttons had fallen off of just shortly after we got the car.  The day we took Peyton home from the hospital the drivers side rear window was rolled down for air, and did not roll back up.  So, it was stuck down, while the drivers was stuck up, and oddly enough the rear view mirror had broken off the windshield and was dangling.  Talk about a stressful, yet joyous, day.  Peyton was brand new and starving so she cried all the way home while Sierra yelled "ow ow ow" with the wind blowing her thick curls all over the place from the broken window meanwhile Jeff has to lift up the dangling mirror every time he needs to change lanes or see out.  It was an eventful day.
At this point the battery was also dying and the jumper cables are in the trunk.  However, because the trunk doesn't go down all the way, you can't open with a key, so you have to use the button in the glove box.  This is totally fine, except when the battery dies, then you can't access the jumper cables.  Three jumps later and a move to Placerville and we finally buy a new battery and no longer have to store jumper cables below Sierra's feet.  :)  We fixed the window and mirror, and replaced the battery, breaks, rotors, calibers and did a complete coolant flush all since Peyton has been born.
The last straw was when I went to smog it.  It passed in all areas except it's smoking white exhaust out the pipe and was only one point away from failing the hydrocarbon limit.  Thus prompting a discussion with our mechanic and decision to retire the poor, tired thing.
To date the Lincoln is 20 years old and has 177,000+ miles on it.  It's really been an awesome car but now that we have two kiddos it's not as practical, per say...

We started our car search and research about 2 months ago but didn't get serious until The Boat didn't smog.  I was embarrassed to even look at minivans and I kept searching SUVs.  However, what I found was that I could get more bang for my buck with a van and better gas mileage.  Plus they are designed for families and that is what I have.  Two people that I know that drive minivans helped me see a different perspective that prompted my more serious shopping of the minivan.  My friend Heather said, "You're more embarrassed to drive around a minivan than a Lincoln Towncar?"--I wasn't embarrassed to drive around a Lincoln because I was so grateful for the car, maybe I will feel the same way about a minivan.  And, my sister-in-law Michelle said, "Well for 1 you can't see yourself in the car when your are driving it...and, being a mom is your identity so it's ok."  They were both right.  Who am I kidding, I am a mom and will most likely be a soccer mom.  I might as well drive the soccer mom car with the trick seats that tumble under, the safety attachments for carseats, the sliding doors that open automatically, and the large, deep back space that fits my double BOB stroller.  I mean, let's face it...I am a mom!
So now the Molinari's are officially on the search for a minivan.  We will let you know when we have success.

"Enjoy it, they grow so fast!"

When you have a baby for the first time everybody admires the baby and then there leaving comments before they depart usually are: "Enjoy it, they grow so fast!"

It's amazing how quickly kids really do grow and change.  Sierra still isn't even 2 yet and I feel like she should be 4 with all the growth and changes that she has done in this past year!  She is talking up a storm and adding 5-10 words to her vocabulary EVERY DAY!  It's amazing to see them learn to comprehend what you are telling them and obey.  It's fascinating to watch them discover something for the first time and really play with it and explore it.  Like today, she picked a dandelion.  She ran over to me to show me and then she studied it.  She smelled it and then she shook it and saw all the little seeds blow away.  She chased a few and wiped them off the things they landed on.  Such intricate attention girls can pay to the smallest of things!

Probably the BEST thing that Sierra has really gotten into lately is singing and dancing.  I LOVE to watch her wander around the yard singing a nonsense song, or breaking out in hopping and clapping and jumping around, singing and saying "Yay," all at the same time.  She's full of personality and loves to laugh and sing.  She's an athlete and will stand on the edge of a brick ledge and shout, "2...3...GO!" and then proceed to run as fast as she can to the other side of the yard.  She loves to play basketball in the backyard and soccer out on any grass.  She's a natural...truly.
The other day I could tell that she was wired and needed to get some energy out.  Jeff had just gotten off work and so we headed to the bike trail in Placerville.  I had the double BOB and we started both girls in that...but Sierra wanted to talk almost immediately.  No biggie, that was why we were there!  So she got out of the stroller and ran.  She ran, and ran, and ran, and ran.  Seriously, we were calulating the run and she ran a WHOLE MILE!  She is not even 2 yet!  She ran the WHOLE THING!  I ran beside her and traded off running ahead of her so she ran to us, or running beside her.  It felt so good to get out as a whole family and exercise together.  I love showing her that exercise and health should be, and is, a very important part of our lives.
I took these photos today.  She is so fun to photograph (sometimes).  Today she is officially 22 months old!!!

It's also beautiful to see the relationship develop between Sierra and Peyton.  Sierra can ALWAYS get Peyton to laugh and smile.  They really love each other and you can already see a bond forming between them.  Sierra loves Peyton and is always concerned with her when she is crying.  She says, "oh no, mama, Peyton's crying."  She gives her hugs and kisses when she is sad and often looks at her and says, "bless you 'Dayton', bless you."  Sierra will tickle her and point to her eyes and say, "Dayton's eyes" and to her nose, "Dayton's nose" and to her feet, "Dayton's beet...yeah!"

Peyton is now 2 months old!!!  (9 weeks to be exact)  She is measuring about 13 lbs. and about 25" long.  She's a little weed.  Some people, when they find out she was a 10 pounder, say, "Oh my!  I'm so sorry!"  But, the thing is I really don't mind!  Both my girls are really good sleepers.  When Peyton was born, she was born sleeping through the night.  I had to wake her up for the first 2 weeks until the doctor gave me the go ahead to let her sleep.  At 2 weeks she was sleeping 6-8 hours a night!  At 4 weeks it was a definite 8 hours.  And now at 8-9 weeks she sleeps 10 hours a night straight.  I am very pleased with that cause my days are so crazy I really need that extra sleep!!!  She too is growing and changing rapidly.  She's smiling all the time.  She evens lets out a little sign and giggle once in awhile.

Both my girls just melt my heart!  I love being mommy!

Small Victories and Epic Backfires

A friend of mine about to have a baby started a family blog so friends and family could follow their journey into parenthood.  I loved the idea SO much that I copied her, thanks Andrea. :)
I wanted to start this blog out with a beautiful story of our family and how we all came to be.  But, today was so epic in parenthood that I just have to share.  I will write the "beautiful blog" later.

Today, Monday morning, I woke up energized and ready for a good day.  Jeff and I are both on our game this morning.  We take turns eating breakfast and entertaining the girls so we can BOTH get showers.  This is a rare occurrence these days.  I decided it was laundry day cause I had the energy and so I began a load and got the others ready to go.  We also needed groceries and knowing if I wanted to continue to stay on board with my newly adopted healthy eating routine I needed to hit the store before dinner time, which meant I had to tackle it with Sierra (21 months) and Peyton (8 weeks)...ALONE!  For those of you who have a couple kids, you know why this is such a feat to take on.  But, alas, I finally made it out the door...it only took us an hour to get out (typical).  Peyton fed and a bag of popcorn and graham crackers for Sierra to last us through the store and we were ready.

We can do this Mom!
We made it through! Sierra ate popcorn and graham crackers for lunch, the whole time we shopped, but I made it through the grocery store.  I also ONLY bought what was on my list and looked through all the prices and got the sale items, the best deals and healthiest options.  When I left the store and I didn't have a meltdown from either child, amazing for being 30 minutes into Sierra's nap, and I didn't overspend or overindulge...I felt on top of the world!!!  This is a mighty victory in mommy land!

We got home, unloaded groceries and I put Sierra down for a nap.  I made lunch and sat down to feed Peyton and myself.  Yes, simultaneously...you learn how to multi-task VERY quickly with children.  Peyton ate fine for a minute or two and then just sat back and smiled and smiled.  She let out a giggle and was SO happy.  I smelt fresh, breastmilk, baby poop (distinct smell) and new she needed a new diaper, but I assumed since it wasn't really strong that there wasn't a lot and she could wait for a few minutes.  She was so happy and I got to finish my lunch.  I picked her up and patted her back and kissed her cheek and just snuggled a bit with her.  Jeff came home for lunch and I got to tell him about my, very proud and successful, shopping trip.  He was in the kitchen making some more to eat when it all happened.

All of sudden I felt warm and wet.  Instantly I knew I should have changed the diaper, but had no idea it was that bad.  I held Peyton away from me as she is continuing to grin from ear to ear and giggle with pure baby satisfaction and slowly looked down to see the damage.  I was covered from chest to knees in fresh, yellow, baby poo.  I said aloud, "oh...my...gosh."  I hear Jeff from the kitchen, "what?"  I stand up, silent, walk into the kitchen, still holding my very happy little baby away from me as her feet are dangling in the air and her face all squished up between my hands, and I just looked at Jeff.  He looks at me, laughs and says. "Oh, wow!"  He thinks for a second and then goes on to say, "And that's my que to leave."  What?!?  Seriously!?!  You're going to abandon me like this?  Yep, he is.  I am a stay at home mom and he needs to go to work.  So, off I go to the bedroom to strip both of us down and throw the clothes in the washer...and of course FINALLY change the diaper now that it's too late.

As Jeff is getting on his bike to head back to work I look at him and say, "Why do I even bother taking a shower?"  He says back as he rides away, "I don't know either.  You just shouldn't!  I love you, by."  Haha, I love my husband!  He is so amazing and I am so happy that I don't have the pressures to be perfect around him.  He loves me for who I am, and that is priceless and precious for every woman!

I look back at Peyton who is lying on the ground still in complete contentment and still wearing her exploded diaper and I just laugh out loud as I sit down to change it.  I do love being a stay at home mom.  Even these epic moments that seem like the worst thing in the world are enjoyable because it's my new job!
